Mallard
Anas platyrhynchos
- I am a good swimmer.
- I feed by "dabbling" and upending in shallow water.
- I eat grasses, water plants, insects, small fish, tadpoles,
freshwater snails, and fish eggs.
- Males and females have distinct coloration.
The male has an iridescent green head, chestnut-brown breast and pale gray body, while the female
is dull brown all over. This drab coloration helps the female hide from predators.
