5. Name That Animal I

Purpose:
This activity allows students to practice using binoculars and observational skills to identify animals.

Data Collection Form - Protocol 5

Materials Needed:

  • Binoculars
  • Student's data collection form
  • Student's journal
  • Posters of wildlife - Wildlife In Washington posters
  • Field guides

Teacher’s Guide:

  1. Mark multiple animals on each poster with post-it note or chalk and have student teams select one.
  2. Place each poster at a distance from a viewing line that use of binoculars is a necessity.
  3. Assign students to groups; 1-2 "observer" to use binoculars
    1-2 "note takers" to record description of animals in their journal
    1-2 "biologists" to identify animal from description.
    STUDENTS TRADE ROLES AT EACH STATION.
  4. Rotate all groups thru stations in timed observations.
  5. Each group will need a copy of Student's Data Collection Form.

Definitions

Biologist - a scientist who studies living organisms.

Common name - the non-scientific name by which a species of plant is known.

Observer - a person who watches what happens but has no active part in it.

Scientific name - the recognized Latin name given to an organism, consisting of a genus and species, according to a taxonomy.

Species - taxonomic group whose members can interbreed.
